In 2010 Sophie Wyndham's world was shattered when she had a stillborn son. Five months later she had a miscarriage. This is the raw account of her struggle with loss and infertility, and the changed woman she became through it. Sophie openly and honestly recounts the journey of healing (and ultimately the birth of a daughter), and gives voice to the silent grief experienced by millions of women and their partners. This is a memoir that is uncomfortable to read, because the subject is so uncomfortable. But with 1 in 4 women experiencing the loss of a pregnancy, and many struggling to conceive, it's a subject that needs to be understood and treated with compassion. Sophie's story is hers, but it is only one of millions like her, and reading it will leave you with a clearer picture of the grief carried by these mama's, and how to support and love those who are experiencing the same grief.

Fragile and Perfectly Cracked A Memoir of Loss and Infertility eBook Sophie Wyndham Reviews

As I get ready to write this review, I am scratching my head asking myself how this book could end so abruptly. I'm actually in a bit of shock to tell you the truth. I was reading the book on a app and I kept trying to swipe to the next page over and over until I realized there was no next page. The End. Just like that. Wow.

Fragile and Perfectly Cracked shares the journey when Sophie and her husband decided they are ready to start a family and the journey they take in their efforts to have a baby. While the subject matter of this book is tough stuff, the story is honest and raw. The subject matter of this book is heavy duty and even uncomfortable at times, but Sophie shares their heartache and emotional loss she and her husband experience along the way.

I don't consider myself to be a prude, but I did feel that the language in this book was much more - well, "blunt" than I am used to, but not unbearable. You could feel Sophie's raw emotions in this well written book. I have to say by not having experienced the course that Sophie and her husband must take, I can't judge how I might feel in the same situation or what I might say. I commend her on being able to put pen to paper and share with readers exactly how the whole experience felt to her. Sophie helps readers understand how miscarriage can leave women feeling very real grief for the baby they have lost, no matter what stage she is when the baby passes. Fragile and Perfectly Cracked will help women experiencing similar challenges feel that they are not alone and that there is hope.

My biggest qualm with this book is the fact that it just ends. Bam. The line on the stick is positive, she's pregnant and then the book is over. I want the story to tie back to the beginning in much more detail, but then, that's just me. I have to admit that I'm happy Sophie starts the book out with her own "spoiler" because it helps make reading the rest of the book just a little easier.

I was provided with a complimentary digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review and unbiased opinion.
In 2009, Sophie and her husband decided they were ready to start a family. Like so many others, they don't anticipate any problems. They don't yet know the statistics that a woman with a normal cycle only has a 20% chance of conceiving each month. They move forward with excitement for this next stage in their lives.

Almost a year later, Sophie finds herself planning and preparing for the arrival of a son. After not feeling well for a week, she begins to have complications. The baby they've longed and hoped for will not be leaving the hospital in their arms, only in their hearts.

What follows is another try, another loss, then Sophie's account of her journey through infertility treatments. It is a raw, graphic, no holds barred view of what she endured.

Having traveled the same path as Sophie, it's VERY hard for me to be objective. The fact that she's willing to open the pain of these moments and share with the world is highly commendable. Sophie doesn't sugar coat what she endured. It's a recommended read, but readers should be prepared for graphic details. There are unhappy parts to any journey through loss and infertility, and Sophie doesn't hold back.

If there's one critique I can add, it's that I wish it was longer. I think opening up further could help the 75% better understand how to support a friend who might be experiencing infertility or loss. Adding in what helped her cope best through those losses, particularly with outside support would allow a non-member of the club some insight into helping.

Overall, that's a really small complaint in sight of the memoir. Thank you, Sophie, for sharing your hurt.

I'm sorry you had to join this club.

I received this book via NetGalley in return for my fair and honest review.

It was with great empathy and camaraderie that I read this book. As a fellow victim of infertility, I shared in the feelings of isolation, torment and immense sadness at both trying to conceive and losing a child. In addition, I also shared in the author's love of London and affinity with King Henry VIII's spurned first wife, Queen Catherine of Aragon (she couldn't birth a living son). Those feelings of commonality and shared experiences carried me through this medium-sized book (68 pages) to its sudden ending.

The writing style was very easy and pleasant and she translated her intense feelings superbly. I was actually a bit put off by the first two pages of the book, already knowing the gist of the topic. Maybe she was trying to capture the attention of the reader by its provocative recounting of the eventual birth of her daughter. As I read on, it soon rewound to her journey of infertility and miscarriages which I read holding hands with her in spirit. I was as taken aback by the ending as I was by the beginning. It just seemed an abrupt ending and I found myself trying to swipe my to the next page, although it said 100% and it was, in fact, the end. Perhaps picking up on the birth she alluded to at the beginning of the book would have brought the journey full circle in a more cohesive manner.

Still, this book was an excellent read. It will be very helpful to those who are experiencing similar challenges to make them feel that they are not alone, and that there is hope. It's a club that you don't wish to belong to and few can truly understand who have not gone through infertility. That is the value this very frank and honest outpouring of an infertility journey. I wish I had this in 1993 when I lost my IVF twins. Like Sophie, my story had a happy ending too. Months after returning from my first trip to England and after years of indignities in medical offices, operations, injections, etc., I had a beautiful son.
I know the author of this book so it was difficult to read what they went thru.
